1Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz I have three special guests this morning. Joining me in the studio is, Annie Warren Clark is the Director of the acclaimed Bay Area Children’s Theatre and starting June 2 to June 36 she is playing, Doralee Rhodes in 9 to 5, The Musical at the 6th St. Playhouse here in Santa Rosa. This is the part that Dolly Parton played in the original movie, 9 to 5.

Also joining me in the studio is Shekeyna Black who is the Public Relations Coordinator for the 6th St. Playhouse and the Executive Director of the Peace and Justice Center in Santa Rosa. I must add she is a dear friend.

Joining me on the phone this morning will be Nancy Rogers who is the Chair for the June 18th Celebration of Juneteenth at Martin Luther Jr. Park in Santa Rosa. We will be talking about their 52nd Year of doing this event. I am proud to report I am on their board, and we are going to have a wonderful, safe event.

My heart is still aching when I think of that horrible shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Nineteen children were killed, the oldest being 10 years old plus two teachers. I was at Costco and every time I saw a child, I cried thinking of those poor children with that mass murder and fifteen police officers outside the door who did nothing
The trauma these children must have felt as they called 911 pleading for help. I can only imagine what the families, the community is feeling. I cannot believe of the incompetence of the leadership in that town, in that state and to think the NRA convention was several miles away and they held it despite of what happened. I guess guns and the Fetus have become more important than those children living. Just look at the news. Child after child being killed, be it in a school or in a war.

Many of us feel powerless and that in my mind comes from fear, fear of standing up and ladies if we do not stand up for our children and their future around this gun control legislation and the potential of taking choice away from us, better said dominion over our own bodies we are going back to the dark ages

The Athena House, a residential program which for 33 years has helped women with addiction avoid prison, will be closed by its parent company California Human Development. A special zoom meeting has been called by NOW Sonoma County Chapter for June 13, 2022, 6:00 to 7:30 pm to resolve this issue. See NOW’s website for details at http://nowsonoma.org/Events.html#1

2 Our first segment guest Nancy Rogers announces the 52nd Annual MLK-Juneteenth Community Festival on Saturday, June 18, 2022, from 10 AM to 6 PM in Martin Luther King, jr, Park in Santa Rosa. Nancy shares some of the history of this event in Sonoma County.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

Come with your whole family. There will be a march this year to honor the life of Community Activist Vince Harper, who recently passed away. The march begins at Juilliard Park at 10 AM and will be led by the HubBub Ensemble, and the march continues to Martin Luther King, jr, Park. There will be bands, food, basketball, and plenty of fun for all.
