1Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz I have a special guest this morning. Joining me in the studio will be Grace Cheung-Schulman who is one of the founders of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Coalition (AAPIC) of the North Bay. We will be talking about some of the challenges and concerns that Asians Americans have in our county and in the United States as a whole.

Today is the last Monday of the month and we will be doing the Women’s Spaces Pledge.

It is Memorial Day and we remember those loved ones who were called to serve in a war and who passed on their lessons learned.

The mass shootings these last two weeks, and most recently that at an elementary school with easily purchased military style high magazine guns by an 18-year-old angry male in a Texas small town, is bringing grief to a national level. Political campaigns funded by the National Rifle Association with dark money, even from other countries, has made our democracy into a dollarcracy, and has hampered any meaningful gun regulation. The Republican Texas Governor Abbott boasts of his major relaxation of gun regulations in his state. When will the children come first?

2.  Our guest Grace Cheung-Schulman shares her immigration story, beginning in Hong Kong. She developed a strong desire to travel overseas as a child and her dream came true when she was accepted to study in music and the arts in Canada. In Santa Rosa Grace became her church music director and directed musicals at the Sixth Street Playhouse. With the rise of the pandemic and the politization of it by the previous President calling it the Chinese Virus, hate incidents against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders increased, causing Grace to reach out and form the AAPI Coaliton for mutual support. Grace notes there are about 23 million Asian American and Pacific Islander people in the United States, comprising 50 ethnic groups originating from 40 countries. AAPIC reaches out to other groups serving these people and to promote events and network for support.
