Producer’s Note: The recording of the live show failed to record the interview with Shekeyna Black after her biography was read. It did not affect the live broadcast, but it does affect the recording uploaded to this site, as well as the repeat broadcasts, in that the last 20 minutes of the show is an added recording of Elaine presenting the main points of the interview with Shekeyna Black and the playing of more Becky Hobbs music in honor of International Indigenous Peoples Day.

Commentary by our host Elaine B. Holtz:   Elaine announces the Braver Angels of the Bay Area Debate on the Recall of Governor Newsom on August 11th. Braver Angels is a nationwide movement to encourage folks with differing viewpoints to come together and air those viewpoints while trying to understand opposing viewpoints of the participants. The debate is a structured conversation in which a group of people think together, listen to one another, and allow themselves to be touched and perhaps changed by each other’s ideas. https://braverangels.org/  See the Announcements below for this event.

Elaine announces that the NOW Sonoma County Chapter monthly meeting is meeting this month on the 4th Thursday (instead of the normal 3rd Thursday) on Equality Day August 26, 2021 6 to 8 PM by zoom. There will be special guests. See the Announcements below for this event.

We celebrate on August 9th each year the International Indigenous Peoples Day to raise awareness and protect their rights. There are an estimated 476 million indigenous peoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up less than 5% of the world’s population, but account for 15% of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s
estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures. To honor this day Elaine reads the Native American Ten Commandments (source unknown from this website).

1. Treat the Earth and all the dwells therein with respect.
2. Remain close to the Great Spirit.
3. Show great respect to your fellow beings.
4. Work together for the benefit of all mankind.
5. Give assistance and kindness wherever needed.
6. Do what you know to be right.
7. Look after the well-being of mind and body.
8. Dedicate a share of your efforts to the greater good.
9. Be truthful and honest at all times.
10. Take full responsibility for your actions.

She also reads a poem of Chief Seattle (1786-1866), who was Chief of the Suquamish and Duwamish Nations, after whom the City of Seattle in Washington State is named. Humankind has not woven the web of life.

We are but one thread within it.
Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.
All things are bound together.
All things connect.

-Chief Seattle, 1854
