3. Megan Kaun and 4. Julie Royas share their journies into becoming active in the elimination of toxic synthetic pesticides, a Toxic Free Future for Sonoma County. Both are mothers with children. Julie noticed how inflamed her son’s skin became with exposure to the use of Roundup glyphosate herbicide at his elementary school and protecting him gives her the strength to attend public hearings and lobby local politicians for policy changes in the use of the pesticides in public places like schools, parks and along the creeks. The latest victory in the county was persuading the Cotati City Council to vote to ban the use of glyphosates like in Roundup in their public spaces. Coming up on Tuesday August 27, 2019 the Rohnert Park City Council will take up discussion of toxic-free landscaping and residents of the county are invited to attend and voice their opposition to toxic pesticide use in the city on public lands.

About our Guest: Julie Royes is a military wife and mother of two. She decided to do something about synthetic pesticide use in public spaces after her doctor tied her son’s mysterious skin rashes to low dose exposure to the synthetic pesticides (glyphosate and others) being used near her home. Julie started the Toxic Free Future campaign in Rohnert Park in 2018 to create more safe public spaces in Sonoma County.

About our Guest: Megan Kaun is an environmental engineer who has taken an unexpected journey into the world of pesticides. An experience at her local park regarding weed killer application near a children’s playground inspired Megan to work toward eliminating unnecessary synthetic pesticide use in Sonoma County. Through her work as a private citizen-scientist and as a board member of Sonoma County Conservation Action (SCCA) and Santa Rosa Water (former), she has helped bring enlightened landscape policies to numerous municipal agencies and schools. Megan holds engineering degrees from Stanford and Northwestern Universities.
